How a clearance bar is built
A clearance bar is a horizontal member suspended between two uprights, or slung from chains, at a set height below the lowest obstruction. The bar is designed to be struck, so it makes noise and gives way rather than stopping the vehicle dead. Finishes are hot dip galvanised or powder coated in high visibility yellow with black chevrons, and we can add a clearance height sign plate so the limit is readable from the approach.
Setting the height
Measure the lowest point of the structure, including services, pipework, sprinklers, ducting and light fittings, then set the bar below that with a safety margin. Position it far enough back from the entry that a driver has room to stop and turn around. If access is shared, a second bar at the exit is often worth the cost.
Complete the entry treatment
Entries are usually treated as a package. Uprights and adjacent walls are protected with in-ground bollards or surface mount bollards, speed on the ramp is controlled with rubber and steel speed humps, sight lines at the ramp head are improved with convex mirrors, signage goes on our galvanised sign posts, and bays inside are set out with car park wheel stops.
